Generic Pharmaceutical Industry Supports 2nd Annual National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day.

Toronto, May 9, 2014 – The following is a statement by Jim Keon, President of the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA) in support of the 2nd Annual National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day to be held Saturday, May 10:

“Prescription medicines provide enormous benefits to patients when properly prescribed by medical practitioners and when the prescribed courses of treatment are followed by patients.

Canada’s National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day is an annual event that promotes the safe storage and disposal of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. In addition to reducing the potential for environmental effects, the safe storage and disposal of medicines helps to reduce opportunities for the misuse and illicit use of prescription drugs.

CGPA commends Health Minister Rona Ambrose, Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the Canadian Centre for Substance Abuse (CCSA) for raising the public’s awareness of safe storage and disposal of medications through their leadership in the organization of the National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day.

CGPA also acknowledges the efforts of Conservative Member of Parliament John Weston (West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country) and members of the Conservative Prescription Drug Caucus in championing this initiative.

For more information about upcoming Prescription Drug Drop-off Day events in your area, please contact your local police service.

Please contact your local pharmacy to learn more about proper medication disposal and returning unused prescription drugs.”
